Evaluating, then treatment planning, a malocclusion has always been performed in 3 dimensions even before 3D digital technology was invented. As orthodontists, we first divide the malocclusion into intra-arch and inter-arch components, and then divide the latter into sagittal, transverse and vertical planes. Today’s technology helps the treating doctor better visualize the end result but treatment planning remains the key ingredient in every successful outcome. Algorithms, software, AI… are all great tools to help the doctor analyze and decide on a course of action, but ultimately the human brain takes control, based on experience, education, and the patient’s chief concern.
